Health is a condition of mental, physical and social well being in which infirmity and illness are absent. It includes a person’s mental and physical well being, which can be examined through self-awareness, assessment and evaluation. In this context the definition of health covers a person’s capacity for well-being that can be measured by means of psychological, physical and social aspects. The goal of a healthy lifestyle is to promote health by maintaining a balance between the three aspects of health.
One of the main determinants of health status is the current physical condition. A health history can be analyzed through different techniques such as interviews and questionnaires. By analyzing a person’s health history, doctors can detect patterns and trends that can indicate specific risk factors and guide them towards preventive measures. Other determinants of health status are current treatments including medical treatment such as visiting a doctor or hospital, and community participation including volunteering. These determinants can be measured using questionnaires and interviews or through data analysis.
Health can also be improved through social interaction. The quality of life of individuals can be enhanced by addressing health concerns, developing personal values and attitudes and practicing good health habits such as maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The physical well-being is affected by mental health and the two go hand in hand. Individuals who are healthy, happy and productive have higher IQs, better academic performance, greater mental health and lower risk of suffering from serious health conditions such as heart disease, cancer, HIV/AIDS, depression, diabetes and osteoporosis. Health education promotes awareness of self-directed interventions that focus on physical as well as mental health and well-being.
